Slow food: how the golden arches gave rise to a snail

Gail Rampersaud, Assistant in Nutrition Research and Education, Food Science and Human Nutrition Department, IFAS, University of Florida
Slow Food is a non-profit, eco-gastronomic member-supported organization founded in 1989 in Bra, Italy. Its mission is to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people's dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. The movement has since grown worldwide with over 80,000 members. This talk will take you through the Slow Food movement from its birth in Italy to its expansion and activities worldwide. We'll explore the Slow Food philosophy and how the Slow Food organization is working to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture.
